Final idea

Instrumental Intro: starts of with a shot of a tall oak tree or tree of the sort. we will then pan down to Tom who will be sitting under this tree playing the xylophone in time with how its played in the score of the music.

Verse 1: Jack walks past the tree as the music kicks in we then have a close up of him miming then when together is said in this first verse on the first line, the camera will pan up into the sky, into a graphic match in which we will see the sky again but in a different location it will then pan down into the flashback. The rest of this verse will be acted out. At the end of the flashback there will be another graphic match of a picture frame of the location that they were walking through at the start, which will then cut to that exact location.

Verse 2: There will then be multiple different shots which will track his movement and we will see him miming the lyrics as he is making his way to there old meeting spot of importance. He will be followed by multiple shot types, such as tracking shots, mid shot, close up, extreme close ups, high angles and low angles.

Chorus 1: When they are at the meeting spot there will be a two shot of them singing to each other but Jack will not be able to see Fran and visa-versa, on the screen it will look like Jack is singing to a ghost of Fran. When the chorus fades out there will be a trombone shot of the two people.

Verse 3: There will be another, which we will cut to a flashback of when Fran is reminded of when they were together, for example when Fran sings the part 'screwed you over' Jack will be talking to another girl.

Chorus 2: This will be the same as Chorus 1. They are at the meeting spot again and there will be another two shot of them singing to each other but Jack will not be able to see Fran and visa-versa, on the screen it will look like Jack is singing to a ghost of Fran. When the chorus fades out there will be a trombone shot of the two people. Fran will be singing the melody in which Kimbra sings.

Outro: At the end as the song as it is fading out we will see and image of Fran (the female artist) burning slowly which Jack is holiday this burning photo may be reversed.

In each of the instrumental melodies there will be many different angles close up, mid shots and extreme close ups of Tom playing the acoustic guitar and xylophone.

Mise-En-Scene

Mise- en- scene
Below is the description of each Mise-en-Scene category and explanation why we are using what we are using.

Costume

Jack Pepper/ Lead male actor
·         Long sleeve chequered shirt (red)- the colour red connotes the fact that he is angry after splitting up with his girlfriend.
·         Grey jeans- the grey creates the idea of confusion and the red with the grey create the state in which he will be portrayed in.

·         Navy pumps- to follow the trendy outfit and shows he is a normal person following fashion trends.
.

Fran Powell/ Lead female actress
·          White dress- the white represents vulnerability and purity after the break up that is a female stereotype.

·         Pink/red belt- the red contrasts with the white that represents an evil side to her character.
·     White pumps- the two pure items of clothing trap her anger inside of her.

Tom Ryder/ Male actor/ Instrumentalist
·         Black trousers

·         Black leather shoes

·         Purple shirt

·         Black V-neck jumper

Tom’s clothing is there to contrast the immaturity between the two characters and how they are mostly bothered about the break up. The smart casual look will show the maturity and professionalism of an older looking generation. Tom is also not part of the actual love story but is there as a father figure.

Props:

·    Xylophone- it is an instrument used within the song

·    Acoustic guitar- it is an instrument used within the song

·    Vase with flowers (red with one whiter flower)- the vase will break and scatter the red flowers (red connotes anger) the scattering shows how both of there anger can not be controlled over the break up. The one white flower will represent hope between the couples relationship.

·    Tupperware- Set in the style of a meal as if they were about eat together but there has been a let down, so the plates will be smashed. The smashing action will represent their shattered hearts.

·    Photo- The photo will be set a light as the male character doesn’t want to be upset by seeing this picture.

Lighting:

·         Exterior locations- Using natural sunlight shining through the trees- to give a more uplifting setting to the upsetting mood created by the break up in the song

·         Living room in couples house- a warm red  lighting, to show that when they were together it was happy between them and everything seemed perfect.

Location:

·  Ballington Woods- a highly forested area with open space, which will give both the male and female characters space to think after the break up.
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=ballington+house+leek&ie=UTF-8

·  House- The living room with big sofas

·  Cheddleton railway- the railway line could represent the tracks of life.
·  Ladderedge country park- another wooded area in which they can stray of the beaten path.

Developed idea

From our feedback which we have gathered from our forum we have came together as a group and analysed this feedback and took out the good parts which we will incorporate into our developed idea.

The opening scene starts of with a shot of a tall oak tree or tree of the sort. we will then pan down to Tom who will be sitting under this tree playing the xylophone in time with how its played in the score of the music. Jack walks past the tree as the music kicks in we then have a close up of him miming then when together is said on the first line the camera will pan up into a graphic match of a flashback. The verse that is the flashback will be acted out. At the end of the flashback there will be another graphic match of a picture frame of the location that they were walking through at the start which will then cut to that exact location. There will then be multiple different shots which will track his movement and we will see him miming the lyrics as he is making his way to there old meeting spot of importance. When they are at the meeting spot there will be a two shot of them singing to eachother but jack will not be able to see Fran and vise-versa, on the screen it will look like Jack is singing to a ghost of Fran. When Fran sings her Kimbra verse that will be acted 'screwed you over' Jack will be talking to another girl. At the end as the song is fading out we will see and image of Fran (the female artist) burning slowly.

Audience feedback analysis

To get our audience feedback we setup a forum to find out what our audience thought about our music video.

Firstly they liked our initial idea but thought it was to basic and lacked a lot of detail, however they did give us good feedback on what we need to incorporate an example of this is a graphic match. we as a group liked this idea because it is a good use f transition without having to use a fade and links two shots together very well if done correctly.
We were also told to make it clear between the past and present and we are showing this through the characters expressions and the cuts.
It was also specified that we use a natural environment throughout the video because this can contrast between the feeling of the video and the environment. Also it gives a sense of isolation and vulnerability by having the characters walking around on the own in a wooded area.

Audience feedback

We the group have set up a forum to get audience feedback from the audience itself instead of using other media students.

Here is the link to the forumhttp://www.marktomjackmedia.websitetoolbox.com/post/Media-intial-Idea-5982577?trail=15#7

Initial idea

This is currently our initial idea, We plan to receive audience feedback to help us get a more in depth idea and how to improve it overall.

Initial idea: We will start the video with a flashback of the time when the couple shown in the video where together and happy in a very typical location for example a living room cuddled up to each other. The video then shows real time and that the couple have split up. We have miming throughout the video and we see the male character walking through various locations for example a forest and country park to get to the location which is significant to the couples relationship. The same also happens for the female character when she is singing. During the chorus we plan on having who ever is singing in the shot and singing to a faded out version of the other character with them facing each other but not actually been in the same location.

Uses and Gratiifcations model

Blumler and Katz

Blumler and Katz suggest that audiences have expectations which they expect to be satisfied by media texts.

The audience needs are:

·         Surveillancetelling us about the world around us
·         Personal identityinfluences how we see ourselves and our place in society
·         Personal relationshipsdevelop relationships with media characters; aids social interaction
·         Diversionprovides escapism from daily life

What audience needs does your planned music video satisfy?

There is alot of contrasts in our planned music video one example been the location been a woodland area would suggewst natural surroundings and calmness but the argument the couple have opposes the first thought, showing that the event the most deserted areas have 'normal' social problems. the characters are very casual old teenagers which isrelatable for the audince, the video does represent common situations but can show that these problems are faced by not the majority but certainly not the minority. We follow the male lead character through the majority of the video even though he is the charatcer in the wrong, but we create a bond betwen the audince and the male from the off and it is only near the end of the video we our opinions change when we see he cheated on the female. With the video lacking any uplifting scenes the video doesn't provide escapism for the audience but allows them to reflect more on the video and whether or not they sympathise with the characters.

Encoding/ Decoding- music video

Stuart Hall

Hall says that there is preferred reading of the text which is encoded using technologies and conventions of the medium, but the audience will respond in different ways to the text.

·         Dominantthe reader shares the text’s code and accepts its preferred reading

·         Negotiated understands the text’s code, generally accepts the preferred reading but modifies it according to their social position and experiences

·         Oppositionalunderstands the code but rejects the preferred reading.  The audience member will be reading the text from an oppositional position (e.g. a feminist reading)

What is the preferred reading of your product and how will you encode the message into the product?

The preferred reading of our product is relatively straight forward, it will show the constrast of the couples relationship through the narrative of the video and the flashbacks will provide insight into the leads up of the break up and what the couple were like before the situation. The cinematography of the video will show our encoded message, we basically want the audince to see that the male character isn't happy with the relationship he is in then in a flashback we see him get caught cheating on the femlae lead whoi plays his girlfriend.

In what ways do think the audience will respoind to your video?

I expect the audince to respond to our video in the way we encoded it, this is because in 3 and half minutes we couldn't create a story with hidden twists, we need it to straight forward. Therefore the audience should see the strained relationship and what the male lead has done causing the couple to break up and argue in the video. However because we can't see the whole back story of the relationship the audience could well side with male character and create their own conclusions.
